TITLE

Limitations of the Restructured Nigerian Power System Through Comprehensive Assessment and Study

ABSTRACT

Power system restructuring usually comes with new changes in the mode of power system operation. The Nigerian Power system have witnessed several changes since its power reform in 2013. This paper therefore assesses the performance of the Nigerian Power system after its reform to determine its limitations and identify available potentials. The power system in Nigeria has gone through several changes within the past two decades. This becomes necessary considering the country’s huge population and the big gap between power demand and power generated/supplied. Power system reform was expected to open up the energy market for more investors to come in and close up these gaps but the reverse has become the case. However, Nigeria ranked 8th in Africa in terms of Electricity Regulatory index Report published by AFDB which indicates that the performance of the country in the reform process needs serious improvement. With an installed capacity of 13GW and availability of average of 5GW, there is huge potential in Nigeria’s electricity market especially in the Renewable Energy sector where the country is planning to generate 3GW by 2030. From this study, there were proposed recommendations for an urgent need to address the Nigerian power system key areas such as: the billing system, reduction of transmission losses and stronger sanctions to DISCOs when customers stay out of power supply for days when there is no disruption on the grid. Finally, Government policies on Power should be implemented in reality rather than ending up in the media.
